Furthermore, this island is home and sanctuary to more than 120,000 Magellanic penguins. Here are things you need to know:

History of Monumento Natural Los Pinguinos

Founded in 1966, this monument was dedicated to protecting penguins from fishing threats. Besides, the fishing industry also plays a big role in depleting penguins’ habitat and life. It is because of high levels of fishing by the fishing industry or companies causing penguins to lose their food source. Furthermore, it leads to their population decline.

Therefore, in 1982, this monument was declared a protected site. It has 30 kilometers of the no-fishing zone and preserves the surrounding area as a breeding site. Fortunately, continuous efforts make Magellanic penguins thrive and increased their population to 6 percent during 2000-2007. Some of them are even migrating to the nearby island due to the island’s lack of capacity.

Popular Tourist Site

Not only for penguins’ sanctuary but also for ecotourism. If you come here, then it will be a wonderful experience. It is because you will have a chance to walk in a single trail with rope as a mark, and on the other side, penguins are everywhere. This site is a very popular tourist site, especially in the summer. In this season, tourists from around the world visit this site to see penguins and also other wildlife. Therefore, tourists need to pay attention and be careful while visiting the island. It is because the distance from the tourist trail to penguins is only about 2 meters.
